im reading a lot of research about the mycorrhizal network because this is a HUGE emerging area of research and there is so much new stuff coming out its sooooo neat
So basically "the mycorrhizal network is how trees send each other nutrients and help each other" is wrong,
but the main reason people were mad at it—because they thought everything in the ecosystem is selfish and competitive acting for its own interests—is much wronger.
How come?
Well...fungi aren't just a postal service for trees. They have lives of their own! Plants aren't just controlling the mycorrhizal network to send nutrients where they want, they are communicating with the fungus and negotiating the terms of that relationship.
The genetic basis in plants for forming the mycorrhizal symbiosis is old. REALLY old. Like, "before plants even came onto land" OLD. Other forms of symbiosis, like what legumes have going on with the Rhizobia, are using the same genes to do their thing. There's a LOT of genes involved with creating the symbiosis, including some redundancies just to be safe, and we're only just now starting to understand them.
Why so many genes? What are all these genes for? Everything! Communication chemicals, hormones the other partner will respond to, flipping switches in the other partner's genes. There was a lot of arguing over which partner, the plant or the fungus, was "controlling" the partnership, but this question turned out to be total nonsense. Both symbionts have to recognize each other, respond to each other, prepare for symbiosis by adjusting how their genes are expressed, form the symbiosis, and continuously negotiate the relationship by exchanging chemical signals. Both can actively select the partner that offers the best benefits. There's even experiments where it's been shown that if the fungus turns parasitic, the plant will start secreting fungicidal chemicals. (But also the mutualist fungi in the experiment outcompeted the parasitic one when the pots were seeded with both.)
Mycorrhizal symbiosis is an incredibly intimate relationship. Like, the fungus produces special organs that literally grow inside the plant's cells, and the plant is actively participating in allowing this to happen. The plants and fungi have genes for hormones used by the other species, they have soooooo much stuff encoded in their DNA for interacting with their symbionts, it's like, blurring the lines for whether they're even separate organisms. There are SO many chemicals involved in communication between them and we only understand a few of those chemicals.
This is SO MUCH COOLER than if the plants were just using the fungus as a passive conduit to communicate with and support each other. The fungus is actively participating!
We were fools and assumed there had to be one partner that was "in control," but both plant AND fungus have to initiate and to some extent they're each engaging on their own terms! Or maybe it's better to think of them as one and the same organism?
We're also finding out that there's a lot more types of mycorrhizal symbiosis than we thought (at least five) and a lot more variety in how it works.
And that's not even getting into fungal endosymbionts—fungi that live inside plant cells completely instead of having part of them be outside and in the soil. They aren't considered mycorrhizae because they're fully inside the plant cells and not connected with any soil fungi network but they do a lot of complicated things we don't understand and interact with the plant's other symbionts.
Fungal endosymbionts produce a lot of chemicals that are useful to the plants in some way, and it turns out, that a lot of them kill cancer. Seriously, we've gotten a LOT of anti-cancer drugs from these guys. I think it's because they have to bypass the plant's immune system, but they also fight each other/other little guys that get inside plant cells, so they kind of...are part of the plant's immune system?
And what's MORE
Is that plants and fungus aren't the only things part of this system! There's also bacteria that are symbiotic with the plants and fungi! Even the endosymbiont fungi have bacteria that are endosymbionts inside THEM. Double endosymbiosis.
I think I read one paper saying the bacteria use the fungi to get around? Like that's how Rhizobia find their way to the legume roots in the first place? Have to double check that one

Into the forest, this image was taken on Mount Nardi, in Nightcap National Park, here the trail conjoins with the Historic Nightcap Track that originally connected Nimbin Valley with Murwillumbah as a postal route in the 1840s-1900s. This area is rich in many diverse ecosystems and holds great populations of many threatened and rare flora and fauna.

@ostrichmonkey RIGHT?! A city that's just dripping in metaphors of colonialism and conquest and how it rots the city to its core is such a good place to set a group of PCs. And a FitD game has the perfect mechanics to show how a chain of events can slide a precariously balanced ecosystem further and further into disaster. I think the biggest question to answer is do we encourage the PC's to move for change in a way that tears down the powers that be without hurting the vulnerable, or will they have to make hard choices that hurt others along the way? As for Wanderhome, I have a little postal bat named Nugget who uses the Moth-Tender playbook. I also designed a little witchy otter who accompanies them on their travels, because I had a feeling they would need someone to turn to when they feel lost or confused. I generate a location and then ask myself what makes the two of them stop on the road. So far they have delivered a package to an ancient spirit, talked to a lonely ghost and a warrior who desperately wants revenge, stayed with an apprentice who just wants to make a good wedding present for their master, and they've just been forced to leave a monastery where a conflict between a scribe and the abbess has been left unresolved. I don't play that often so when I do pick up the book again, I have to re-familiarize myself with the path, but the time away allows fresh ideas to rise to the top.

It's like he's TRYING to broadcast to the entire world how little he knows about any of the things he's doing and how he's eliminated all of the competent staff who would normally prevent this kind of thing.
Like "Twitter" is one of the most globally recognizable brands in the WORLD, and trying to achieve that type of marketing awareness is INSANELY difficult, not to mention that effective SEO for a single letter is basically impossible to achieve.
For example: think about searching for something like "Jack Black Twitter" and now think about the search for "Jack Black X" how likely are you to land on the result you're trying to find? There's a REASON companies choose names that are natural sounding but slightly obscure. Google, Bing, Yahoo, MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, TikTok etc. are names designed to effectively optimize the ability for search engines to locate and elevate the results when people are looking for them. Now think about how many other pages have "X" in them and how a search engine can effectively surface that.
The worst part of this is that this is what the ultra rich are capable of doing to an entire communications system at their whim. Imagine if this was a private postal service, but if it suddenly shut down, every letter or piece of mail that you'd ever sent with them would also vanish. Like, there will be Internet Archive backups, but that's mostly it.
Back in the early 2000s, if your admin went fucking nuts & privated the whole community, if they became mad with power and drove everything into the ground, if someone just didn't renew the domain name or the server owner didn't allow you to keep being hosted — the community could still find backups of the information and restart it somewhere else. I know this because we did exactly that in the early 2000s with the forums I've been an admin of now for almost 15 years.
Twitter can't really do that and Threads or other pop-up replacements are just solutions of other mega corporations trying to monetize upon an unstable market and reinforce their own existing ecosystem, and further gain control over more of those things in a single location that's incentivized AGAINST allowing multi-party interoperability like Reddit cutting off API access to third parties after Twitter did the same. Yes, tumblr is a refuge but for how long?
This is also why online communities moving off webforms and on to Discord gets worrying, because when THOSE communities go dark, the totality of that information up and vanishes. No Web Archive backups. Nothing. There is a worrying volatility about historic information these days, and while I know online platforms don't seem all that important sometimes, it's important to remember random documents and manuscripts are historically significant.
Conversation about preserving digital video games is getting more prominent as companies stop supporting the distribution platforms and the games just up and COMPLETELY vanish at the whims of some random rich idiot who doesn't know what the fuck they're doing, or who does know and doesn't care.
Not just that, but a lot of modern social media platforms are usually the only methods of correspondence we have with at least a few people, and there's a wealthy third party who essentially owns your ability to stay connected to them. It's kind of terrifying to watch how easy it is for someone to sabotage that out of idiocy and ignorance, but it should be more worrying to consider how much easier that would be for someone with the full intent to do so.
Capitalists & oligarchs don't care about the things they preside over, and while it's fun to point and laugh at their expense when the extension of the thing they represent is catching fire, it's important to also consider exactly what the big picture of that means for the future.
I slept in and just woke up, so here's what I've been able to figure out while sipping coffee:
Twitter has officially rebranded to X just a day or two after the move was announced.
The official branding is that a tweet is now called "an X", for which there are too many jokes to make.
The official account is still @twitter because someone else owns @X and they didn't reclaim the username first.
The logo is 𝕏 which is the Unicode character Unicode U+1D54F so the logo cannot be copyrighted and it is highly likely that it cannot be protected as a trademark.
Outside the visual logo, the trademark for the use of the name "X" in social media is held by Meta/Facebook, while the trademark for "X" in finance/commerce is owned by Microsoft.
The rebranding has been stopped in Japan as the term "X Japan" is trademarked by the band X JAPAN.
Elon had workers taking down the "Twitter" name from the side of the building. He did not have any permits to do this. The building owner called the cops who stopped the crew midway through so the sign just says "er".
He still plans to call his streaming and media hosting branch of the company as "Xvideo". Nobody tell him.
This man wants you to give him control over all of your financial information.

Magic Eden Launched 'Captain Laserhawk' NFT with Ubisoft
Magic Eden launches an exclusive Captain Laserhawk NFT collection with Ubisioft.
The limited edition series of 10,000 NFTs will be linked to Ubisoft's Web3 game.
The NFTs will provide players early access to the game, apart from other benefits.
Magic Eden launched an exclusive Captain Laserhawk NFT collection on Friday. In collaboration with Ubisoft, the limited edition series of 10,000 NFTs will soon be built on the Arbitrum blockchain. These NFTs are linked to Ubisoft's latest Web3 game.
According to an official statement, the NFTs will provide players access to its governance model, user-generated content features, and rewards. Additionally, by accessing these NFTs, the players can influence the game by contributing their creations and unlocking exclusive rewards. As a bonus, the players who hold NFTs get early access to the game and can be a part of a community with direct links with the Ubisoft developers.
Interestingly, Captain Laserhawk: The G.A.M.E is based on a Netflix series, Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix, which itself draws inspiration from Ubisoft's game - Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. Reportedly, Captain Laserhawk: The G.A.M.E is a top-down multiplayer shooter game set in the dystopian world of Eden. Iconic characters from Assassin's Creed, Beyond Good & Evil, and Rayman are said to make an appearance in the game.

The team stated that the NFT, known as the Niji Warrior ID card, will differ based on the player's performance. It implies that if a player plays well, they could unlock more benefits and also enhance their governance model. Notably, the activities of the players will be measured through Eden Score. Didier Genevois, the Web3 Executive Producer at Ubisoft, said,
We're empowering our community to not only play but also shape the future of the game. It's about creating a collaborative ecosystem where players' decisions and creations directly impact the game's evolution, making the experience truly their own.
Notably, this partnership marks Arbitrum as Magic Eden's latest support. Earlier, Magic Eden had engaged in the swapping and management of digital assets for Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Polygon, and Base. Developed in September 2021, Magic Eden offered only Solana NFTs during its initial stages.

Rooftop Gardens in Urban Landscapes
🌳 The New School's Green Roof
🌳 New York City's Community Gardens
In this article from Bent Architecture, an argument is made for rooftop gardens instead of run-of-the-mill green roofs. From the outside, green roofs might seem like a fantastic idea — they're streamlines, pretty to look at, and inject some much needed greenery into urban skylines, but they don't hold much benefits. The grass that we know from front lawns and sprawling parks is already an invasive species in this country, and we don't need any more of it. Grass also doesn't have that many environmental benefits. It requires a lot of maintenance and water, and when cut low like it usually is, it doesn't make much of a habitable environment for insects which would be the most-likely user in areas like New York City and other urban spaces.
Bent Architecture has a philosophy when designing rooftop gardens: "Let the plants win."
They describe wanting to create an oasis for people while also creating a healthy, thriving ecosystem for the plants and organisms that live within them. This approach to gardening (whether on a rooftop or not) is a necessary shift in order to make green spaces like lawns and parks all across America more environmentally friendly. Currently, the vegetation that is planted fits the idea of what people want to see, not what the soil wants to grow. By sticking to native species and not interrupting the natural flow of nature, we can create thriving ecosystems even in the busiest and most urban of environments.
Urban gardens, on the other hand, hold so many benefits, not only for the planet but for us living in the surrounding areas. Bent Architecture emphasizes that usable green space will always be better and in higher demand than non-usable green space. So many people lament about how they would love to be able to escape to Central Park on their lunch break if only it wasn't a 20 minute train ride away. People want to connect to nature, if only to have a bit of breathing room in a city so jam packed with people, and rooftop gardens are a great solution to this.
Metropolis Magazine reported on two former USPS locations in Chicago and New York, both densely populated urban landscapes desperately lacking green space, had implemented rooftop gardens. The one in Manhattan is the size of Gramercy Park, yet isn't taking up any more space than it was before its existence. What formerly was a practically useless, boring rooftop became a reprieve from city life and smoggy air. This became a new place for people to see each other and have conversations. If it was open to the public, it would undoubtedly become a well-loved third space for so many people.
Green roofs and rooftop gardens also help the built environment. Rooftop gardens provide insulation for the colder seasons but also help the building breath in the hotter months, sinking heating and cooling costs but also lowering the amount of energy it takes to heat and cool a building. Green roofs also have one very beneficial feature for an island city such as Manhattan, which is that it can capture rainwater and prevent it from becoming excess runoff. In recent years, New York City has been experiencing a lot of flooding problems due to the changing climate and that is because the rainwater has nowhere to go.
According to DC.gov, a couple of inches of soil (which is present on all rooftop green spaces) can capture 1" of rain which is the equivalent to about 0.6 gallons of water per square foot of green roof area. Now multiply that by an rooftop green space that has the equivalent square footage to a park and that is a lot of water being stored without any more ground space being taken up.
We should be pushing our public officials to make our lives and the world a bit better by implementing these green spaces which, in the end, help them, too!

Navigating the Maze: E-commerce Logistics and Amazon Fulfillment in China
China, a global e-commerce powerhouse, presents both immense opportunities and complex challenges for businesses seeking to fulfill orders efficiently. Understanding the intricacies of e-commerce logistics and Amazon fulfillment in China is crucial for success.
E-commerce Logistics Landscape:
China boasts a vast and diverse e-commerce logistics landscape. Traditional options like postal services and express couriers offer widespread reach but can be slow and expensive. Third-party logistics (3PL) providers offer a wider range of services, including warehousing, fulfillment, and last-mile delivery, catering to specific needs and offering greater control. Additionally, fulfillment by marketplace (FBM) allows sellers to manage their own fulfillment, but requires robust infrastructure and expertise.
Amazon Fulfillment in China:
Amazon, a major player in China's e-commerce ecosystem, offers its Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) service. This allows sellers to store inventory in Amazon's fulfillment centers across China, enabling faster delivery times and improved customer satisfaction. However, FBA comes with fees and specific requirements regarding product size, packaging, and labeling.
Choosing the Right Path:
The optimal approach depends on factors like order volume, product type, budget, and geographical reach. Businesses with high-volume, fast-moving products may benefit from FBA, while those with lower volumes or specialized products might find 3PL providers or FBM more suitable.
The Future of Fulfillment:
The e-commerce logistics in China landscape is constantly evolving. Emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and automation are streamlining processes and optimizing fulfillment operations. Additionally, increasing cross-border e-commerce demands necessitate efficient and reliable international fulfillment solutions.
By understanding the nuances of e-commerce logistics and Amazon fulfillment in China, businesses can navigate this complex environment effectively, ensuring timely deliveries, satisfied customers, and a competitive edge in the ever-growing Chinese e-commerce market.

What is an AVS Check?
Address Verification Service (AVS) check is a crucial component of payment processing systems, particularly in the realm of online transactions and card-not-present (CNP) transactions. AVS is a security measure designed to verify the billing address provided by a cardholder during a transaction, ensuring that the address matches the information on file with the card issuer. This verification process helps prevent fraudulent transactions and reduce the risk of chargebacks, ultimately safeguarding merchants and cardholders from unauthorized use of payment cards.
The AVS check works by comparing the billing address provided by the cardholder during the transaction with the address information stored in the card issuer's database. This database contains the billing addresses associated with the payment card, allowing the AVS system to validate the accuracy and completeness of the address provided by the cardholder. The AVS check typically verifies the street number, street name, city, state, and postal code of the billing address to ensure consistency and accuracy.
During the AVS check, the address information provided by the cardholder is encoded and transmitted securely to the card issuer for verification. The card issuer then compares this information with the billing address on file and generates a response code indicating the level of match between the two addresses. The response code is returned to the merchant's payment gateway, allowing the merchant to determine whether to approve or decline the transaction based on the results of the AVS check.
There are several possible outcomes of an AVS check, each indicating a different level of match between the billing address provided by the cardholder and the address on file with the card issuer. The most common response codes include:
AVS Match: This indicates that the billing address provided by the cardholder matches the address on file with the card issuer. A full AVS match provides a high level of confidence that the transaction is legitimate and can help reduce the risk of fraud and chargebacks.
AVS Partial Match: This indicates that some components of the billing address provided by the cardholder match the address on file with the card issuer, but not all components match exactly. While a partial AVS match may still be considered acceptable for transaction approval, merchants may choose to apply additional verification measures to mitigate the risk of fraud.
AVS No Match: This indicates that the billing address provided by the cardholder does not match the address on file with the card issuer. A no AVS match may indicate a potential issue with the transaction, such as fraud or a typographical error in the address provided by the cardholder. Merchants may choose to decline transactions with no AVS match or apply additional verification measures to confirm the cardholder's identity.
AVS Not Supported: This indicates that the card issuer does not support AVS verification for the transaction. In some cases, AVS may not be available for certain types of transactions or payment cards. Merchants should exercise caution when processing transactions without AVS support and consider implementing other security measures to mitigate the risk of fraud.
Overall, the Address Verification Services check is an essential tool for merchants seeking to prevent fraudulent transactions and reduce the risk of chargebacks. By verifying the billing address provided by the cardholder during a transaction, AVS helps ensure that the transaction is legitimate and authorized by the cardholder. While AVS is not foolproof and may not detect all instances of fraud, it remains an important layer of security in the payment processing ecosystem, providing merchants with greater confidence and peace of mind when accepting card-not-present transactions.

The CDO's Top Ask: An Ecosystem That Delivers | Yantra Inc
I am starting with a story from the 90s. Bear with me for not only is it interesting, but it also has a context for our friend, the Chief Digital Officer (CDO).
Around 1996 when credit cards exploded into the market amidst the expected initial chaos, the systems were primitive. Merchant-signing banks accepted transactions from all banks, reimbursing themselves by drawing a draft on the issuing banks through the Federal Reserve System. While the merchant banks sent them through the U.S. postal system, the clearing draft was posted to a suspense ledger. And this was merely half of the entire complicated, siloed process!
Naturally, the credit scene suffered from many unprocessed transactions and criminal activities. Until Dee Hock, a bank official organizing regional committees to address this created what became the ubiquitous credit card company, Visa™. His approach was simple: a mindset change from passive subject to the deliberate architect of a holistic banking ecosystem, which ultimately enabled credit cards to take flight. Hock realized early on the need for a self-serving networked organization that would organize, evolve, and invent itself, and creates what is today the credit card ecosystem.
Every revolution needs an ecosystem to make it happen. Industry 4.0 needs a strong ecosystem of manufacturers, ancillaries, and digital enablers like robots, and another deep tech to deliver. The IT revolution of yesterday needed an ecosystem of software products, hardware products, software service providers, engineering colleges, entrepreneurs, and more. Cut to today’s digital revolution: a fully functional, developed digital ecosystem inside and outside the organization is the need of the hour, with the Chief Digital Officer (CDO) at the center of it.
What is a Digital Ecosystem?
A digital ecosystem consists of:
Chief Digital Officer + team; Chief Information Officer + team & Chief Business/Product Officer + team
Technology/software service providers
Management consultants
Senior leadership and Board
Finally, the customer
Each of the teams and individuals involved is allotted different and specific tasks. But their end goal is the same – to make digital transformation happen, in line with the business goals.
Challenges of A Digital Ecosystem
The ‘digital culture’, promoted by the CDO and his team is still a work in progress. Becoming a worthy ally to the CIO and his team, who is the primary client of the software or technology service providers, is still a challenge. Getting software service providers and management consultants aligned to the data monetization vision has not been simple either. And there is always the concern of a buy-in from the senior leadership, the Board, and of course, the customer.
Organizations often end up giving more importance to team enhancement than team building. Whereas a small yet cohesive, engaged, and motivated team committed to data monetization is far more effective than a large group of diverse roles with no real connection. Let us take the example of a Fortune 100 insurance company. Digital transformation and data monetization were key goals. Huge teams were formed with a lot of leadership hiring as well. But, due to a lack of focus and too many projects with little cohesion, the output was limited to more overheads than any real execution. Significant restructuring and formation of a small team under an able CDO later, the first big idea and success came about. Risk assessment was a capability honed over years with thousands of enterprise clients. So far, this capability was merely an enabler for their core offering i.e. insurance. But thanks to the data monetization mindset, the big idea emerged: what if risk assessment itself is sold as a service to enterprise clients? Who better than an insurance company, the real risk assessment expert, to offer this crucial service? And the ecosystem made the execution happen. With continuous learning & improvement, collaboration, and consistent delivery.
